Senate Orders IGP Ibrahim Idris to Return Willie Obiano’s Security Aides

An order was given to the IGP Ibrahim Idris by the Nigerian Senate to immediately return the security aides of Willie Obiano the Anambra state governor.

The IGP again told the Senate why he withdrew Obiano's security personnel that it was due to the forthcoming governorship election in the state and to prevent the re-occurrence of past experience adding to his reason, he said the military had in the past caught an ADC to an unnamed governor escorting a vehicle loaded with arms on Election Day. It was not just Obiano’s aides that were withdrawn but that of political appointees, Local Government Chairmen and others in Anambra inclusive till after the election.
He concluded by saying he didn’t mean any harm whatsoever to the governor and his ADC will be returned to him after the election on Sunday morning.

The Senate was not just satisfied with his reasons, claims and his decision on this issue, Senator Biodun Olujimi said if the Anambra situation was not corrected immediately, the President and Senate President may lose their aides come 2019 election. She asked when it has become the duty of the IGP to take over the aides of a sitting governor as this was a clear pointer to what will happen come 2019 election.

The Ekiti lawmaker said that the IGP has messed things up and that the governors’ aides be returned immediately and nothing of its kind should happen again.
As a support to the issue on ground Senate leader, Senator Ahmed Lawan said “Governor Willie Obiano’s aides should be restored so that this will not become a trend in the country”

Senate President Bukola Saraki said that whatever actions of the IG of the police were a directive of the government but the IGP should always learn to do the right thing. The committee on the police affair committee was directed by the Senate to ensure that the governor’s aides be restored and report back to the Senate on Thursday, November 16, 2017.
