I Condemn Buhari for Supporting El-Rufai’s Plan to Sack Teachers -Fayose

Governor Fayose in his reaction towards the sack of 21,800 teachers by Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s and the backing of the president in this matter, he regards as not being right in all its sense.
It is not the duty of the government to set exams for teachers rather it was the duty of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) to regulate the teaching profession and take actions towards any form of misconduct in the sector.

He added that not minding the inability of the state to pay salaries, it should not sack any worker under this guise of incompetency.

He made reference to a similar action that took place in Ekiti state, how the past APC government used competency test to demote primary school head teachers, secondary school principals and vice-principals which led to the sudden removal of many of the affected people, though the test was to be forced on teachers but they declined.

As I speak to you now in Ekiti state, students are being taught by the same teachers the government tagged incompetent and the student’s excellent performance in NECO in 2016 and 2017 gave the state first position and in 2014, 2016 and 2017 made giant strides in the West African Examination Council’s Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WAEC) as they moved from 26% to 36.5%, 42% and 74.86% respectively.

Fayose advised the APC government not to hide under the guise of competency test to drop or sack teachers but should learn from Ekiti State how they were able to get optimum performance from the same set of teachers harassed with a competency test.

There is a need for comprehensive structural reform in the state.
