Do Not Clone Nigeria-Made Products - SON Warns

The STANDARDS Organization of Nigeria (SON), warned importers against cloning Nigerian made products or risk prosecution yesterday.

Engr. Bede Obayi , SON’s Director of Enforcement and Monitoring, while speaking at a one day stakeholders forum on Ease of Business for port operators in the South West, said that the agency had noticed that importers were now cloning imported products, particularly Nigerian cables and presenting them as made in Nigeria.

He stated it clearly that such cloned products will not be allowed into the Nigerian markets by ensuring that they go through testing in SON’s laboratories before they are cleared from the ports. Obayi explained that because made in Nigeria goods and cables are in high demand globally, importers now clone their brands and bring them into the country. Made in Nigeria cable is one of the best in the world and fraudsters are into the business of cloning them and later import them to the country as if they are made in Nigeria and already certified by SON. Imported product cannot be branded as made in Nigeria.
SON is insisting that any would be importer must conform to SON’s Conformity Assessment Program
